The vice president and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have strong environmental records. But they haven’t been uncorked on the campaign trail.

Vice President Kamala Harris is sprinting to define herself during a historically short presidential campaign.

But she has so far resisted bringing one issue onto the campaign trail: Climate change.

Harris did not mention her long record of trying to address rising temperatures and their damaging effects on low-income communities in the video that was used to launch her campaign. As she and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz blitzed across several swing states last week to introduce him as her running mate, neither emphasized their significant climate credentials. A new ad released by the campaign on Thursday that was aimed at Latino voters, who polls show are very concerned about climate change, did not mention the administration’s historic climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act.

The omissions, up to now, contrast with Harris’ priorities as vice president.
