Many countries may not face any new tariffs on their exports to the United States under the reciprocal tariff plan that President Donald Trump plans to roll out on April 2, a top White House official indicated Wednesday.
“There are more than 100 countries that don’t really have any tariffs on us and don’t have any non-tariff barriers,” Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, said in an interview on Fox Business Network.
On the other hand, there are “probably about 10 to 15 countries that account for the entire trillion dollar trade deficit, and they have both non-tariff barriers and big tariffs,” Hassett said, indicating those are the ones that would be hardest hit.
However, many of those countries already are offering the Trump administration concessions to avoid the tariffs, Hassett added, without identifying any by name.
