Vineyard Wind supplier says ‘manufacturing deviation’ caused blade break

The incident last week — a first for the nascent U.S. offshore wind industry — came at a complicated time for the sector, which has battled political scrutiny and economic challenges for months.

The manufacturer of the turbine blade that broke last week at the Vineyard Wind offshore wind project indicated Wednesday the affected blade experienced a “manufacturing deviation.”

“We have not identified information indicating an engineering design flaw in the blade,” GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik said in discussing the findings to date of its review during an earnings call.

The incident — a first for the nascent U.S. offshore wind industry — came at a complicated time for the sector, which has battled political scrutiny and economic challenges for months.

Some Republican lawmakers have pointed to the incident as proof of their concerns about the U.S. industry. Former President Donald Trump has also pledged to halt offshore wind projects “on Day One” if he is reelected.
