Aaron Szabo last year was lobbying for a trade group that had previously questioned EPA plans for tighter restrictions on emissions of a cancer-causing compound used to sterilize medical equipment.

Now, Szabo could be in line to head the EPA office in charge of implementing those regulations.

It’s one point of potential overlap between Szabo’s past work as an industry hired gun and his expected position at EPA. Multiple sources have told POLITICO’s E&E News that he is President Donald Trump’s choice to head the agency’s powerful Office of Air and Radiation, a position that requires Senate confirmation.

EPA has thus far neither confirmed nor denied those reports. Szabo has left his previous post as a senior director at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath and now has an EPA email address. He did not reply to a message Tuesday seeking clarification on his status at the agency.
