Steven G. Bradbury, a longtime federal attorney, has called the Biden administration’s fuel economy standards “pure fantasy.”

President-elect Donald Trump has named a longtime conservative lawyer who helped write Project 2025 — and is sharply critical of regulations to cut planet-warming emissions — as his pick for deputy Transportation secretary.

Trump announced Saturday on Truth Social that he would nominate Steven G. Bradbury to the crucial position at the Department of Transportation. If confirmed, Bradbury would serve alongside Trump’s nominee for Transportation secretary, former Rep. Sean Duffy, bringing with him a long background in government service and nuts-and-bolts policy issues.

Bradbury served as DOT’s general counsel during the first Trump administration, working under then-Secretary Elaine Chao. He briefly served as acting Transportation secretary when Chao resigned in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
