As President-elect Donald Trump’s eldest son arrived in Greenland on Tuesday, close Trump allies made the case for why the incoming administration would want to take hold of the mineral-rich Danish territory.
“Here’s why we should want it. They’ve got rare earth minerals, we already have some kind of a space base there, it would fortify us against the Russians,” Scott Jennings, an ally of Trump, said during a roundtable on CNN on Monday.
Added Jennings: “Trump’s a wheeler-dealer, make an offer to Denmark and see what they have to say.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has made a pitch to build up the U.S. presence in Greenland — a region of the world the incoming president and high-ranking Republicans have often flagged as an under-the-radar but strategic location that would allow the U.S. to counter Russia and dip into highly sought-after resources.
