Trump revives bid for coal renaissance

The president failed to boost coal in his first administration. Now he’s betting that surging energy demand will revive an industry in decline.

President Donald Trump is trying to bring back coal.

It’s not the first time.

When Trump first took office back in 2017, coal was on the decline in the U.S. The administration scrambled — but failed — to provide a major lifeline to keep power plants burning the fuel that powered the Industrial Revolution.

But coal supporters think this go-round could be different. That’s because U.S. power demand is set to spike dramatically in the coming years, with widespread concerns that the country will struggle to meet the challenge.
