Tropical Storm Francine forms in Gulf, aiming for Louisiana

The tropical storm system, about 245 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande, had maximum 50 mph wind speeds Monday and was forecast to drift slowly northwestward.

MIAMI — The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Tropical Storm Francine has formed off the coast of Mexico, with a projected track to approach the coast of Louisiana.

The center says Francine is located about 245 miles southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande river, and about 480 miles south-southeast of Cameron, Louisiana.

Francine’s top winds right now are about 50 mph.

Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, Louisiana, said during a weather briefing over the weekend that parts of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana should expect a “whole lot” of rain in the middle and later part of this week.
