The Biden administration is set to formally update connector requirements for federally funded electric vehicle chargers to a new standard based on Tesla’s charging plug, acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White said on Tuesday.
The long-anticipated move comes as independent standards organization SAE International has all but finished a new open standard based on the Tesla charging technology, which will now be known as J3400.
“In the coming weeks, you will be seeing an update from the federal agencies on what we call the J3400 standard. That will be the standard moving forward, and we’re really happy to report that out,” White said at a conference hosted by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation.
White told POLITICO that the federal standard is “forthcoming very soon,” but didn’t provide an exact date beyond saying it would be done before the new administration takes over.
