The Sunrise Movement and other youth-led advocacy groups are fuming over Sen. Chuck Schumer’s recent support for a GOP-led funding bill.
The Senate minority leader prompted a progressive backlash when he marshaled enough support from his party last week to pass Republicans’ bill to keep the government funded. The bill averted a federal shutdown, but Schumer’s critics on the left view the move as a capitulation to President Donald Trump and his GOP allies.
“Chuck Schumer’s cowardice is inexcusable,” said Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the Sunrise Movement. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk are hurtling our country toward disaster while young people are watching their future go up in flames.”
Sunrise — along with the College Democrats of America, Gen Z Against Trump, United We Dream Action and Voters of Tomorrow — penned an open letter to Schumer on Thursday calling on the New York Democrat to “fight for us or step aside.”
