New Mexico Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury is mulling a bid for ranking member of the House Natural Resources Committee with the backing of current top Democrat, Rep. Raúl Grijalva.

Stansbury’s interest in the job comes one day after Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat, exited the ranking member race in the face of a challenge from Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), who has amassed significant support in the caucus.

A Stansbury entry into the race would present Huffman with a new hurdle before he’s officially minted as the next ranking member, and could force a full caucus vote between the lawmakers.

In an interview with reporters Tuesday, Stansbury did not commit to running. But she claimed to be finding support in the caucus for a contested race during her outreach.
