The Senate approved legislation Tuesday evening that sponsors say will protect coastal areas.

H.R. 5490, the “Bolstering Ecosystems Against Coastal Harm (BEACH) Act,” from Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.), would approve new expanded maps under the Coastal Barrier Resources Act. It passed the Senate by unanimous consent after moving through the House in September.

“By expanding these maps, my bill will help make our coastal communities more resilient while maintaining fiscal responsibility and critical environmental protections,” Kiggans said when she introduced the measure.

The Coastal Barrier Resources Act bans the use of federal dollars — including floor insurance — to support development in storm-prone or ecologically sensitive areas.
