Republicans slam Biden on plastics treaty

Lawmakers want the administration to ditch its support for a global pact limiting plastics.

House and Senate Republicans are asking the White House to take back its support for a United Nations treaty that would limit the amount of plastic produced each year.

Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday, warning such “extreme views” lack bipartisan support that would fail to get two-thirds of the Senate’s votes for ratification.

In a separate letter to Blinken on Wednesday, 26 House lawmakers said the administration’s new left-leaning strategy for dealing with plastic pollution “is impractical and presents serious legal concerns.”

Two months ago, top White House environmental officials signaled a newfound openness to capping some single-use plastics manufacturing and imposing restrictions on particularly troublesome plastic types and chemicals.
