Former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will join the Council on Foreign Relations as a distinguished fellow and co-chair of a new task force on economic security, the think tank announced Monday.

Raimondo, who joined the Biden administration in March 2021 after serving as Rhode Island’s governor, is credited for her extensive knowledge of the economics of artificial intelligence, semiconductor chip manufacturing, and technology transfer between the U.S. and foreign countries.

Council President Michael Froman said in a statement that former Cabinet secretary’s leadership work for the group “will significantly bolster CFR’s mission of informing U.S. engagement with the world and help drive key initiatives in this pivotal moment.”

Raimondo’s signature accomplishment at Commerce was overseeing the distribution of $50 billion in microchip subsidies authorized by Congress under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. She also was instrumental in elevating national security measures within Commerce during a period of rapid technological change and rising competition from China.
