Parties prepare for 2025 congressional, state races

This year’s political contests will offer clues about voters’ feelings ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

The 2024 elections are in the rear-view mirror, but a handful of notable elections are on tap for 2025.

President-elect Donald Trump’s expected nominees will leave House seats open in Florida and New York. Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) resigned from his seat in November in anticipation being named attorney general. Even though he withdrew from consideration, the seat remains empty.

Virginia will hold its closely watched gubernatorial and legislative elections, as will New Jersey. And a number of major cities — including New York City and Atlanta — will elect mayors.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, a member of House Republican leadership, will likely leave in the coming weeks to become Trump’s United Nations ambassador. The departure would trigger a special election.
