Alan Shaw, the president and CEO of Norfolk Southern, who helmed the railroad through the disastrous toxic derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, in 2023, and who is being investigated for alleged misconduct, is stepping down, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
Heather Garcia, a spokesperson for the railroad, declined comment on whether Shaw plans to resign or leave the company.
Citing anonymous sources, the Journal reported that Shaw is under scrutiny for having an undisclosed relationship with an employee at the railroad. The board hired a law firm to undertake an independent investigation into the allegations and is committed to complete and reliable examination of the facts, the company said.
Shaw has been with the company since 1994 and has been president since Dec. 1, 2021. On Sunday, Norfolk Southern said that Shaw was being investigated by its board into “allegations of potential conduct” that is “inconsistent with the company’s” policy and ethics code.
