NOAA began firing probationary employees Thursday as part of the Trump administration’s mass cutbacks of the federal workforce.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many staffers were fired across the nation’s premier climate, weather and fisheries agency. But employees inside the agency began receiving verbal notifications from supervisors shortly after 3 p.m., according to three people, including one fired probationary employee.
Tom Di Liberto, a probationary public affairs specialist in NOAA’s Office of Communications, shared an email confirming his firing sent by NOAA acting Administrator Nancy Hann.
A NOAA spokesperson also confirmed that termination notices for probationary employees were sent Thursday afternoon.
