Sen. Bob Menendez — who was found guilty earlier this month on all 16 counts in his corruption trial — is expected to resign from office effective Aug. 20, according to two people familiar with his plans.

A resignation letter from Menendez was processed in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon without objection from any senators as one of the first orders of business after the chamber gaveled in for the week.

“The chair lays before the Senate a communication regarding the resignation of Sen. Menendez,” read presiding officer Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.). “Without objection, the letter will be printed in the record and spread upon the journal.” The full text of the resignation letter will appear in the Congressional Record.

On Monday, the Senate Ethics Committee said it would begin an “adjudicatory review” of alleged violations by Menendez that’s necessary when considering actions such as “expulsion or censure.”
