Witnesses from the government and private sector briefed lawmakers Wednesday on the challenges and opportunities for the U.S. to extract hydrogen gas from the ground.
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing marked the first time committee members discussed the emerging practice of tapping into underground hydrogen reservoirs.
“We must ensure the United States continues to lead the world in advanced energy technologies by using all of our resources in the cleanest way possible, including all types of hydrogen,” said Chair Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

Ranking member John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) shared Manchin’s enthusiasm for geologic hydrogen, proclaiming that the energy source “plays to America’s strength, not those of China.”
