The Energy Department announced Friday it awarded the first tranches of funding to the Heartland and Mid-Atlantic hydrogen hubs — the last two hubs to receive their funding from a $7 billion bipartisan infrastructure law program started under President Joe Biden.
The funding — announced in the last days of the Biden administration — provides $20 million to the Heartland hydrogen hub to begin its first phase of activities, like initial planning, design, and community and labor engagement. Another $18.8 million was awarded to the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub for its initial activities.
The Biden administration first announced the selection of seven hubs in October 2023, which started the award negotiations.
The Heartland hub, led by the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center, is poised to receive up to $925 million. The hub includes North Dakota with proposed project locations across the Upper Midwest and Colorado.
