Interior awards $71M in tribal clean energy grants

It is the second round of awards from a pot set aside in the Inflation Reduction Act.

The Interior Department will dole out $71 million to provide electricity to homes in 13 tribal communities, as well as transition existing electrical sources to greener power.

It is the second and final round of funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Tribal Electrification Program, which taps money from the Inflation Reduction Act. The first round of funding included $72 million for 21 tribal organizations in March.

Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland said the program has provided tribes with reliable electricity “essential to daily living.“

“Working with Tribal governments on developing clean energy sources and bringing the benefits of dependable electricity to their communities is part of our mission of service to federally recognized Tribes,” he said.
