President-elect Donald Trump covets Greenland, which is estimated to hold around 1.5 million tons of rare earth reserves.

House Republicans on Monday floated legislative language that would clear a path for President-elect Donald Trump to acquire Greenland — even as leaders of the mineral-rich Danish territory insist any decisions will happen on their terms.

Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee has floated a bill, H.R. 361, dubbed “Make Greenland Great Again Act,” that would authorize the president to enter into negotiations with Denmark to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

“American economic and security interests will no longer take a backseat, and House Republicans are ready to help President Trump deliver for the American people,” Ogles said in a statement.

The legislation would allow Trump to enter into talks with Denmark just after noon on Jan. 20 — when he’s scheduled to be sworn in — related to acquiring Greenland.
