Environmentalists are pressing the Trump administration for documents that they hope will shed light on the inner workings of the Elon Musk-led effort to downsize the government.
The advocacy group Center for Biological Diversity submitted a Freedom of Information Act request this week to the White House Office of Management and Budget requesting a variety of records from Trump’s newly formed U.S. DOGE Service. That office is home to the Musk-led “Department of Government Efficiency,” which Trump has said is aimed at boosting government performance.
The FOIA request asks for an updated staff directory for the office, the calendar schedules for new volunteers or paid employees, and emails and messages between people working for DOGE and people working outside of the federal government. The environmental group is also seeking correspondence from DOGE employee Katie Miller and from her husband, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
“Every day that goes by with DOGE operating in the shadows should be a deep concern to ordinary Americans,” said Kierán Suckling, the Center for Biological Diversity’s executive director. “We’re going to uncover what’s really on their agenda and stop any attempt to make our air and water dirtier, weaken protections for our nation’s most imperiled wildlife and turn over our public lands to polluters and the fossil fuel industry.”
