The Republican National Convention’s opening night repeatedly turned to energy policy Monday as speakers assailed inflation and the high cost of living.
The evening’s program also included the first public appearance by former President Donald Trump — now officially the party’s nominee for the White House — since an assassination attempt against him Saturday.
Trump had not previously planned to attend and did not speak, but wore a bandage over his right ear as he strode to a stage and greeted right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and his pick for vice president, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).
The theme of the first night of speeches at the Milwaukee event was “Make American Wealthy Once Again,” which heavily emphasized former Trump’s promises to curb inflation.
