Florida Power & Light wants to charge its 5.9 million customers for restoring power after hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton hit the state this year.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Public Service Commission staff on Thursday recommended approving Florida Power & Light Co.’s request to charge customers nearly $1.2 billion for damage caused by three hurricanes this year.

The details: PSC staff is recommending the commission approve the interim storm restoration charge, subject to a later refund once costs are reviewed in the coming year.

“Once the total actual storm costs are known, FPL should be required to file documentation of the storm costs for Commission review and true-up of any excess or shortfall,” the staff recommendation said.

Public Counsel Walt Trierweiler, whose office represents utility customers, said Thursday he is not contesting the FPL’s initial request, but the final amount will receive full scrutiny.
