The new head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency vowed Sunday to “reform FEMA” after President Donald Trump said he plans to abolish or overhaul the agency.
In his first public remarks since taking over FEMA last week, acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton said on the social media network X, “We have some work to do at @FEMA, and we are ready to implement the President’s agenda.”
Hamilton, a Trump supporter and unsuccessful Republican congressional candidate in 2024, did not address Trump’s comments Friday about providing FEMA disaster aid through the White House and issuing an executive order to begin “reforming for getting rid of FEMA.”
Trump’s statements — and his appointment of Hamilton — raised concerns that Trump will turn FEMA disaster aid into a fund to reward friends and punish enemies, as he did at times in his first term.
