Exxon Mobil sued green groups and California Attorney General Rob Bonta over their “deliberate smear campaign” against plastics recycling.
Filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Exxon’s complaint is a sharp rebuttal of claims that the oil giant has deceived the public for decades about the realities of recycling plastics.
The “blatant misstatements and attacks on ExxonMobil’s character” left the oil giant with a damaged reputation that has hurt business and were driven by a motive to “serve private foreign interests,” according to the complaint.
Bonta, a Democrat, and a coalition comprising four environmental advocacy groups brought separate lawsuits in September, claiming Exxon broke state laws by promoting plastics recycling lies.
