The American Petroleum Institute announced Monday that a former Senate staffer and veteran of oil and gas giant Shell would be joining as senior vice president of government relations.

Kristin Whitman joins the oil and gas trade association after 17 years with Shell, where she advised and led the federal government and corporate relations team. She departed from the oil company in March 2023 and has since worked as external affairs vice president at chemicals manufacturer Albemarle.

At API, Whitman will advocate for oil and gas industry priorities as Republicans take power in Washington. She is no stranger to Capitol Hill, as she began her career as a staffer on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, working for six years under Republican chairs Frank Murkowski (Alaska) and Pete Domenici (N.M.), API said.
