A letter warned that if a proper “regulatory framework is not established on time,” the EU risked stalling the development of its carbon capture market.

Six major European countries Thursday urged Brussels to accelerate its guidance on how to create an EU-wide transport network for captured CO2.

The joint statement brought together several of the EU’s largest economies, including Germany, France and the Netherlands, with the Nordic countries Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

The letter warned that if a proper “regulatory framework is not established on time,” the EU risked stalling the development of its carbon capture market, which aims to trap carbon emissions at industrial sites before storing them away.

The statement called on the incoming European Commission, which is likely to begin its work around December, to issue the guidance “early in its mandate and no later than 2025.” It was published to coincide with the annual Industrial Carbon Management forum in Pau, France.
