EPA taps mining industry attorney for air office post

EPA has picked a veteran of President Donald Trump’s first administration for a new post in the Office of Air and Radiation.

Katie Mills is now the deputy assistant administrator for permitting and regional matters, according to an updated online roster of top air office appointees.

The attorney joins EPA from the National Mining Association, where she served as associate general counsel since 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Before that, she held several jobs at the Interior Department during Trump’s first term, eventually becoming acting principal deputy assistant secretary for policy, management and budget, the profile indicates. She also held various legal positions at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality from 2015 to 2017.
