A popular electric boat startup plans to set up manufacturing operations in the United States — a move that could lead Candela to build its first plant outside of Sweden and take the company a step closer to going public.

The planned development is intended to meet growing U.S. demand for the company’s personal watercraft and commercial ferries amid a growing emphasis on using clean energy technologies that are made in America, according to Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog.

“It’s natural to set up a plant there,” he said in an interview from Stockholm, the water-laced capital of Sweden. “You’re kind of forced to [do] it.”
