Taking aim at the Department of Energy would undercut the agency that took on a bulk of the spending from the Democrats’ massive climate law.

Energy Department officials are creating a hit list of clean energy projects awarded billions of dollars that the Trump administration could wipe out in potentially the largest rollback of the Biden administration’s climate achievements, according to five people familiar with the plans.

The list, which the Trump administration officials requested be submitted by the end of this week, includes projects that received grants and loans under the Inflation Reduction Act, bipartisan infrastructure law and annual appropriations, according to three DOE staffers who were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive details about the effort that has not yet been completed.

Any program or project that has spent less than 45 percent of its appropriated or awarded funding is required to be reviewed, according to the information provided to POLITICO by a person familiar with the effort.

An initial list of projects that had been eyed for elimination included $8 billion for hydrogen hubs, $7 billion for carbon capture hubs, $6.3 billion for industrial demonstrations, $500 million for long-duration energy storage, $133 million for the Liftoff program for accelerating new technology development and $50 million for distributed energy energy programs, according to the person who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic.
