People who lived through wildfires, floods and hurricanes want the federal government to file criminal charges against fossil fuel companies.

More than 1,000 survivors of wildfires, floods and hurricanes are asking the Department of Justice to investigate the oil and gas industry for alleged climate crimes.

Representatives of the survivors will deliver a letter Thursday to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking him to look at the fossil fuel industry’s role in accelerating climate change and worsening natural disasters.

They argue in the letter that although their stories and experiences are diverse, “the fossil fuel industry’s misconduct is a consistent throughline.”

More than 9,000 climate advocates also signed the letter, which argues that the oil industry has known about the dangers of burning fossil fuels since the 1950s, but has sought to mislead the public.
