The California Public Utilities Commission wants to give itself more time to vote on a plan to consider closing the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility north of Los Angeles, it said Tuesday.

The commission was set to vote Dec. 19 on a plan to consider eventually shutting down Southern California Gas’ Aliso Canyon facility that was the site of the biggest natural gas leak in U.S. history in 2015.

On Tuesday it issued an order to extend the deadline to vote on a proposed closure plan through March 31. The agency said it needed to ensure it had “ample time to thoughtfully deliberate on the proposed decision and address any unexpected issues in that process.”

Agency spokesperson Terrie Prosper said the commission could still vote next week and that the timeline extension was “pro forma” in case they decide not to vote.
