President Joe Biden nominated Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chair Christopher Hanson for another five-year term Thursday.
The leader of the nation’s chief nuclear regulator will now face the Senate confirmation process, months after former Commissioner Jeff Baran was not renominated by the White House after facing Senate opposition because of his support for more stringent safety regulations.
Hanson’s keystone proposal has been to develop a framework, known as the Part 53 rule, to lessen regulatory burdens on new next-generation reactors that the Biden administration hopes will play a key part in a clean energy future.
