President Joe Biden is considering issuing an executive order as soon as Friday to accelerate permitting for the construction of data centers to power artificial intelligence on federal land, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The timing and details are not yet final and plans could change. But the order would broadly aim to fast-track the development of large data centers to help meet tech industry demand, said the two people who were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive discussions.

The order would also seek to boost geothermal and nuclear energy production to power the data centers, though specifics remain unclear on what that would entail, the people said.
