President Joe Biden announced Thursday that he will nominate Matthew Marzano for a five-year term to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Marzano has served on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee under Chair Tom Carper (D-Del.) since January 2022. Currently, he’s on detail at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, the federal government’s signature nuclear energy research lab.
The NRC could be at its full five-commissioner complement if Marzano is confirmed. He’s slated to fill the vacant Democratic spot of former Commissioner Jeff Baran, who was not renominated by the White House after facing Senate opposition because of his support for more stringent safety regulations.
According to the White House, Marzano advised Carper on the development of the ADVANCE Act, legislation designed to enact broad changes at the agency to ensure the next generation of nuclear gets off the ground. The bill was signed by Biden into law earlier this month.
