STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — Adam Met, a big-deal indie pop star whose multi-platinum band sold out Madison Square Garden in July, woke up early Sunday morning to make his way to a shopping mall in this suburb about 15 miles north of downtown Detroit.

The 34-year-old musician is also a climate wonk trying to help elect Kamala Harris in November. When he’s not touring with his chart-topping band AJR, Met works on environmental and clean energy policy. He’s a Columbia University professor and founder of a climate nonprofit.

He traveled to Michigan alongside climate activists in an attempt to drum up support for the Democratic candidate and to knock on the doors of voters in the swing state. It’s part of a broader push by green groups and the Harris campaign to motivate climate-minded voters heading into November.

As a savvy online millennial with a big social media following, Met previewed his trip on Instagram.
