11 countries demand 3-year delay to EU’s landmark methane rules

The EU Methane Regulation will introduce new obligations in January requiring oil and gas firms to monitor, report and verify emissions of methane.

BRUSSELS — Eleven EU countries including Poland, Italy and the Netherlands have called on the EU to postpone the rollout of its landmark regulation on methane emissions by three years, according to a letter seen by POLITICO, following a campaign by the fossil fuel industry.

It comes ahead of a summit of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg on Friday, in which the rules will be discussed.

The EU Methane Regulation will introduce new obligations in January requiring oil and gas firms to monitor, report and verify emissions of methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases, in line with EU or U.N. standards.

But industry has argued that much of the infrastructure to comply with the rules doesn’t yet exist and has called on Brussels to reopen the legislation and introduce “targeted amendments.”
