As an analyst for the California Department of Transportation, Marcus Evans built a program that analyzes how climate change affects state freeways.

After Donald Trump’s reelection as president, Evans has a bigger proposal: convince Californians to secede from the U.S.

Evans, 47, is asking the California secretary of state to let him collect signatures for a potential ballot measure called “Calexit,” a play on “Brexit,” the United Kingdom referendum in 2016 in which voters withdrew the nation from the European Union.

Calexit has failed to get enough signatures to make the state ballot in previous attempts in 2015, 2017 and 2018. If it’s on the 2025 ballot, approval is unlikely, one analyst said.
