OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has congratulated Donald Trump on his return to the White House, leaning heavily on ties between Canada and the United States.

“The friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world,” Trudeau shared on X on Wednesday. “I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both of our nations.”

Trump’s surprise win in 2016 destabilized Trudeau’s government. Ahead of the 2024 election, the prime minister mobilized a “Team Canada” charm offensive to minimize potential fallout.
