Former Rep. Rick Nolan, a Democrat who represented northeastern Minnesota, has died at age 80.

As a lawmaker from the state’s famed Iron Range, Nolan regularly split from fellow Democrats to push pro-mining policies. He served on several key committees, including Agriculture and Transportation and Infrastructure. Nolan served two stints in Congress separated by decades.

He first came to Washington in 1975, representing Minnesota’s 6th District until 1981. He then left politics and spent years working in Minnesota’s export trading industry.
