Calif. Senate leader names special session committee on oil and gas

SACRAMENTO, California — Democratic Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire on Tuesday announced that members of a special session committee that will meet in advance of Senate votes on Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s oil refiner proposal.

State Sen. Steven Bradford (D), who chairs the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee, will chair the new Senate Special Committee on Fuel Supply and Price Spikes, McGuire announced in a news release.

The committee will meet in the afternoon Oct. 7, ahead of an Oct. 11 floor session to vote on A.B.X. 2-1, Newsom’s proposal to give the California Energy Commission authority to require oil refiners to store more gas, which is intended to provide a buffer against price spikes caused by supply shortages. The Senate Appropriations Committee will also meet Oct. 8, according to the release. McGuire’s announcement came hours after the Assembly voted to approve the bill, with amendments.

“The Senate intends to work quickly and efficiently so that we can get Californians the relief they deserve at the pump,” McGuire said in a statement.
