President Joe Biden issued a proclamation late Monday that more than doubled the import quota for solar cells shipped to the U.S. that will not face tariffs, giving a reprieve to U.S. solar panel makers that depend on foreign-made components.
The move comes as the U.S. tries to ramp up its own domestic manufacturing capacity through incentives provided by Democrats’ climate law to fill gaps in the U.S. solar supply chain.
Biden increased the amount of solar cells that are exempt from tariffs to 12.5 gigawatts from a previous level of 5 GW.
In the proclamation, Biden said the domestic industry “has been making and is continuing to make a positive adjustment to import competition,” pointing to the growing module production and company plans to increase domestic cell production.
