The Energy Department on Thursday said it has conditionally committed to a $1.45 billion loan guarantee for solar manufacturer Qcells to open a facility in Georgia.
The announcement marks the latest effort by the Biden administration to boost the domestic manufacturing supply chain for renewable energy.
The company’s facility, just northwest of Atlanta, would be the largest silicon ingot and wafer plant ever built in the U.S. while also producing cells and completed solar panels, according to DOE.
The facility is already partly constructed and began producing completed modules earlier this year, with production of the wafers, ingots and cells still to come.
