Trump attacks EVs, ‘green new scam’ in RNC speech

Former President Donald Trump led chants of “drill, baby, drill” and pledged to get rid of the Biden administration’s “green new scam” in a speech Thursday night that capped the four-day Republican National Convention.

Trump gave the longest presidential nomination acceptance speech in U.S. history, using much of the time to detail last weekend’s assassination attempt, rail about illegal immigration and insult Democrats. The former president also made clear that the party’s energy platform centers on boosting fossil fuel production and repealing the Inflation Reduction Act, President Joe Biden’s landmark climate law.

“We have more liquid gold under our feet than any other country by far,” he said. “We are a nation that has the opportunity to make an absolute fortune with its energy. We have it, and China doesn’t.”

The U.S. is already the world’s top oil and liquefied natural gas producer. Trump, however, asserted that his plan to increase domestic energy production would help the U.S. overcome hostile nations — and solve inflation.
