The cargo ship that demolished the Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier this week is spilling hazardous material into the Baltimore harbor, federal investigators say.
The ship, loaded with 4,700 cargo containers, remains entangled with the wreckage. Some of the containers have been breached, and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board said they saw a sheen in the water when they boarded the ship Wednesday.
It isn’t clear what substances are leaking into the harbor, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a press conference Wednesday night. The ship had 56 containers carrying hazardous materials, ranging from corrosive chemicals to lithium-ion batteries.
The Dali, registered in Singapore, had undergone maintenance on its engines shortly before the collision, the Coast Guard said Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The NTSB is also looking into unconfirmed reports that the ship had suffered electrical power failures while it was docked in Baltimore, Homendy said.
