U.S. subsidies for biodiesel create a mess
As far as Congress was concerned, the road to developing a U.S. biodiesel industry was paved with good intentions: Tax incentives would stimulate a growing supply of renewable fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a new source of domestic fuel. But what has happened instead is a grand mess. Millions of dollars' worth of U.S. tax credits appear to have been collected by foreign biodiesel suppliers through a shipping practice called "splash and dash," and U.S. biodiesel exported to Europe has raised accusations of "biodumping" and the possibility of a trade war.
